About

The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is the world’s largest computer organization. ACM’s dedicated efforts as an international scientific and educational organization, since 1947, has been advancing the art, science, engineering, and application of information technology. ACM serves both professional and public interests by fostering the open interchange of information, and by promoting the highest professional and ethical standards.

Here at the University of Michigan–Dearborn (UM-D), we established a new student chapter in 1995. Our only requirements for membership is an interest in computing and some connection to UM-D.

The student chapter of ACM is committed to providing members with an unparalleled and fun learning environment. In 2001, 2002, and 2003, one of the teams teams entered for each of those years finished in the top 25, at the ACM East Central North America Regional Programming Contest, one of the many regionals held around the world that lead to the world contest of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest.

Recent activities include:

  • ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest
  • ACM Picnic
  • High School Chess Competition
  • Lectures by Computing Professionals
  • MPcon Lan Party (South-east Michigan’s largest lan party for the last 8 years.)
  • Support of High School Computing
  • UM-D High School Programming Competition
  • Un-Official Fridays

ACM members are able to take advantage of each other’s advice on classes, projects, and employment opportunities; Enjoy use of the ACM office’s refrigerator, computers, printers and scanners; Participate in social activities such as bowling, pool, roller skating, and occasional trips to local drinking establishments; And purchase CD-R’s, printer paper, floppy disks, pop, and chips at ACM member prices (1/2 OFF!)

Our meetings are catered, occur once a month, and attendence is not mandatory. Did we mention it’s catered?

At a mere $5 annual membership fee, ACM is a bargain as well as a fun way to gain insight from your peers and build your resume.

Please Note: You do not have to be a member of the national charter to join the student chapter, but if you choose to, it’s only $19. Besides, it grants you access to industry related resources, and it looks good on your resume too.
