Hey, I wanted to know if any of you know about a UMD LUG. I've searched umd's website, and all I found was a few articles here and there about linux. If there isn't a LUG here at the campus, would anyone want to help me make one?
I when to a IEEE meeting last Thursday, and at the meeting they announced that with a $30 membership all Microsoft software is free except M$ office and Windows 7. In the Computer wing there is a large billboard that says "MICROSOFT SOFTWARE" with prices underneath.
Windows XP professional -- $5
Windows Vista Ultimate -- $15
Windows 7 Ultimate -- $20
MS Office -- $50
I don't think anyone realizes what is really going on here. To M$ we are a goldmine, they're only giving their software away for almost nothing because they're getting a lot more money out of us in the long run. Yet no one seems to realize this, they just think great it's cheap, and it's the only thing out there. In every class I have I see computer screens, and almost without exception on the computer screen is a little Windows symbol on the bottom left, and in the other cases there's an apple in the top left. I have yet to see anyone running Linux.
It seems odd to me that in a place with so many enlightened individuals no one takes their digital freedom seriously. This is something that needs to be fixed. People here don't realize that there is an alternative that's cheaper and better. I want to make more people aware of GNU/Linux, so they don't have to be a M$ investment, and so they don't have to use a shitty os.
Also, here's a poster I made:

spammers, googlebot, and me.
I saw your poster before I saw this post. I'd be interested in helping you start a LUG. I'm sure there are others too. Do you ever go to the game lab on the second floor of the CIS building? Talk to Cale Colony of UPE and I know that ACM is trying to get active again so you could bring your idea up to Bradford Dillon as well. I'm sure they will be more than receptive.
I have no idea who has admin rights to this forum anymore either or else I'd create you a subtopic so it could get some use. |

Anytime is probably good, but Wednesday night is probably the best, since UPE still does game night.

I'm not sure of the context of your acronym.
If you really meant CCS (College of Creative Studies) then kind of, but I don't think I've ever seen those guys in there.
If you meant CS:S (Counter Strike: Source) then not really, but they do play TF2 and L4D on game nights.
If you meant Computer Science Saturday for the Boy Scouts of Michigan, UPE is doing that in January I believe.
Otherwise, I don't know. |
